The Meadow has been the home of the village football and cricket teams going back to the late 1800’s and the old pavilion still survives on the far side of the ground. This originally had a thatched roof and water was carried across to it in a bucket before the luxury of a two wheeled hand water cart could be pulled across by the players. With no electricity in the original building changing could be very hazardous on a cold December or January afternoon. During the war the field was ploughed up to provide land suitable to grow food on and it was not until 1951 that football was played again on the current ground. The installation of Calor Gas for lighting and a Calor Gas boiler for tea making improved the facilities for everyone. Walsham were founder members of the Bury & District league and as a junior side were very successful, winning the Suffolk Junior cup in 1987-88, 88-89 and 89-90 after being beaten finalists in 1973-74. Numerous Bury and district league titles and cups were won before entering the Suffolk and Ipswich league in 1989-90, in the first season we gained promotion to Senior football and then bounced between the two divisions before establishing ourselves as a Senior side in 97-98 by finishing in 4th position. The following season 3rd position was achieved and the Omnico league K.O. cup was won. 4th position was achieved the following season and the cup retained and Paul Smith was appointed manager for the start of the next campaign. The league record then reads 4th, 1st, 1st and 2nd with two Omnico cup final appearances and one victory.
Season 2004-05 was our first in the Ridgeons league First Division and we finished fourth with our first Suffolk Senior Cup Final appearance at Portman Road to cap a very exciting time for the club. The installation of floodlights and the general improvements to the ground with the new changing rooms due to be finished later this season will then give us a facility to be proud of. We currently have teams in the Ridgeons reserve league, the Suffolk & Ipswich League, the Bury Sunday League and a new Under 18’s team in the Ridgeons youth league.
